While trying to fix a problem i was having with DNS, i screwed up. You know how if you setup a forward lookup zone, you get two zones? One is named whatever your domain is and the other has a .root in it somewhere. Well I accidently deleted the .root one. Is there anyway I can recover that, or do I have to delete and recreate the whole zone from scratch again?

Why would you get two zones? The only reason you would get a root zone is if your network was not connected to the Internet otherwise you are not supposed to have a root zone.

When we set up the network, we we did as much as we could without being connected to the internet, so that makes sense. When setting up DNS for the first time, we must have have no internet connection. So I should be fine correct?

If your server will be connected to the internet you don't need the . zone. If you have that zone, your server will belive that it is the king of the hill, the most important server in the whole internet and you won't be able to enter forwarders.
Your server will not ask other servers (ISP server for example) about queries that it cannot complete.
One more thing it is best that you check the Do not use recursion on the Forwarders tab.
If you leave that unchecked your server will use the servers from the Root hints tab to resolv queries that it cannot complete and that may be a security issue.
