MY
i am not familiar with this backup storage device.i am using hp Storageworks dat 40 and veritas backup executive evaluation as backup software.the problem is i do not know how to read the used tape from the veritas application. One more thing, the tape device that i had already installed does not appear in veritas screen.i hope to get any reply as soon as possible.
thank u.

A few basic things first:

1) Is the the tape format compatible with Backup Exec? What application was used to write data to the tape??

2) Can you see the tape device from the scsi bios on boot?? If so - Can you see the Tape device under windows device manager?? If so - try re-installing the Veritas drivers throught the device configuration wizard.

After you have addressed the first two issues all you need to do is "catalog" the tape in Backup Exec & then you will be able to select the data for restore.

Hope this helps

Cheers

dear Rols,

thank you 4 ur reply

the application use for writing the data is tapeware software.for ur question on this matter:
Can you see the tape device from the scsi bios on boot?? If so - Can you see the Tape device under windows device manager??

the answer is yes i can see it.
but then i am using the veritas evaluation 60 days.if i am not mistaken i might able to lose the evalution software if i do reinstall it back since i only manage to use it for 60 days.if there any solution that u might know rather than this one?.And one more thing what do u mean "to do is "catalog" the tape in Backup Exec"? as i told u b4 i am totaly not very familiar with these device and i am not sure whether i am at the right path.

and one more thing, one of my staff here said that tape drive
could not be detected throughout window explorer.is that true?if so why?
if i am not mistaken, all removable storage can be detected throughout the window explorer.

sorry if this question seem to be silly question for u.

thank in advance.

ok

Good news Backup Exec will be able to read a tape that was written using tapeware.

If your evaluation period for Backup Exec has expired you will not be able uninstall Backup Exec & reinstall to reset the evaluation time - it will still remember that the time has expired. To get around this you need to manually remove all Backup Exec / Veritas registry entries. If you are not familiar with the windows registry I would advise against doing this.

In Backup Exec go to the Devices tab - your tape drive should be listed there (make sure that the tape is in the drive. Right click on the tape drive & select "inventory". When the inventory is finished right click on the drive again & select "catalog". When the catalog has finished (it may take a while) click on the Restore tab - you should then be able to select the files you wish to restore. Then go ahead with the restore.

You may also want to think about using windows NTBACKUP if you cannot use Backup Exec.

You will not be able to see the tape device through windows explorer - the tape drive must be used in conjunction with software to perform the restore.

hi again Rols,

yup i did all the steps given by u and i did see the device on my veritas storage tool list.but when i run the inventory, the
alert msg show me this msg "Media is unrecognized. The media in drive 'HP 1' is written in an unrecognized format. Erase the media to make it usable."
what does it means?i am totally blank with this msg since i cannot format this tape (the backup data is still in there).

again thank in advance.

Hi 141980,

I owe you an appology - after doing a little bit more research it seems that Backup Exec will not be able to restore a tape that was written using Tapeware please refer:

Which is strange because I thought that tapeware used MFT.

Looks like you will have to get a copy of Tapeware and install it to perform the restore. (A trial version is avalible from their website -
Sorry about the confusion.

Cheers
