How to Power Down my Solaris 8 Ultra 5?

I know I can push the button on the front of the box, but I sealed it off with scotch tape because my 1 and 1/2 year old techno-explorer keeps poking it with his little fingers, to make the green light blink. (Yes, he is somehow able to reach it)

When I type "shutdown" at the root prompt, it begins shutdown process, but stops with this error: "... RPC: Program not registered..."

I tried "init 0", but then it only logs me out and give me an "OK" prompt.

How do I POWER it down without physically touching it?

Thanks,
Irshad

If init is working , try " init 5" to power off the system.

Actually there may be two shutdown commands will be there
in your system. One is BSD version and another is SYSTEMV
So try the shutdown command with full path

# /usr/sbin/shutdown -y -i5

Hope it helps...

Suresh.

Hi

You used the correct command to bring the operating system down. Look on the back of the case. Our Ultra 5's have an on/off switch on the back.

Also watch out for the keyboard power down switch. Your techno expert may find this feature in the near future. I know some of my users have.

Thank you everyone for helping with this problem.
I found out the easiest command to shut down the Ultra 5.

Just type in:
poweroff
at the root prompt.

Thanks,
Irshad
