i have several .swf Flash files in my harddisk which i want to play in linux, doesn't matter in a standalone player or some other thing.

I was able to play them in mandrake 7.2 last time but now i can't. Opening up the .swf file in netscape(with flash 5 plugin installed properly) displayed a lot of gibberish on the screen.

What should i do?

I would go back and get the flash plugin again. Make sure the correct files are in the /usr/Netscape/plugins folder.
To check and see, open Netscape and in the address bar, type: about:plugins Cheers,

i followed the instructions & everything was ok for the swf extension when i input "about:plugins" in Netscape.

Still the the .swf file can't be opened in Navigator & played back. Instead a lot of gibberish symbols were displayed.

i remembered last time, my .swf wasnt played back in Navigator itself but in Konqueror's embedded viewer.

What am i doing wrong?

To add, Konqueror doesnt have a filter or an extension for swf, and it complains everytime i try to play swf.

netscape, i think, can't play embedded objects if they are not actually embedded in html.
i veen think this is the same on both windows and linux.
so just put some object/embed tags round it and it should just work like a charm.

you said that it displayed it like a lot of gibberish, .. so i think adding .swf to your mime files should also make a difference. i guess it just renders it like it would do on any other accii file.

hope this helps

ps.. ohyeah , .. i use the java based stand alone player to play swfs on linux (haven't got enough ram to load in ol'chunky'netscape( who has really ;-)
but the java player should work on any platfoprm so maybe thats the way for you to go aswell

Greetings there denthijs,

Can instruct me on how to obtain this Java-based Flash standalone player, and it's usage?

That will be the best! :)
