HOW TO PING NOVELL SERVER AND VERIFY CONNECTIVITY

I HAVE TWO CISCO ROUTERS SETUP WITH IP AND IPX, I CAN DO IP END TO END, BUT IPX CAN ONLY BE DONE BETWEEN THE ROUTERS, HOW DO I PING OUTSIDE THE ROUTERS TO MY SERVER

PC IS CONNECTED TO TOP ROUTER AND BOTTOM ROUTER CONNECTED TO NETWORK HUB IN WHICH A NOVELL SERVER IS LOCATED.

OBJECTIVE IS TO LET THE TEST PC CONNECT TO THE NOVELL SERVER VIA THE TWO TEST ROUTERS SIMULATING OUR REMOTE CLIENTS.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS, AS THIS IS MY FIRST IPX NETWORK

From cisco's site:
&quot;..format errors
Number of bad packets discarded (for example, packets with a corrupted header). Includes IPX packets received in an encapsulation that this interface is not configured for...&quot;

If you remember in the original posting you made I suggested that you do your homework on the various encapsulation types and their cisco equivalents.

If you look at the output of sh ipx interface you
will see a line that gives you the ipx address and
the encap type. Make sure that your encapsulation
is the same for your interfaces.

I must not be understanding something, as I have looded at the show ip interface, and I have looked at encap types and cisco equivalents.

Our server is running 802.2 and 802.3.

I have attempted to make the encap arpa and novell-ether, on the router but still have no success with seeing the ipx server, or pinging it via ipx.

If you do not mind, explaining, I would like to learn the intracacies that I am missing here.

The default encap for your interfaces is novell-ether.
(802.3)
The default for recent novell installations is 802.2.
As you have already explained your server is using both
frame types.
A problem occurs in this though:
An ethernet interface can have multiple encaps so each
encapsulation must have it's own logical network
assignment.


so:
(config-if)ipx network AD encapsulation novell-ether
(config-if)ipx network AE encapsulation sap

You'll notice that your routing seems to be working.
Your networks are all advertised and are the same on
both routers. Furthermore you can ping all of your interface addresses.(at least on one router???) I
did not see the OP of direct pings from the bottom
router.

As it is right now though I am at a loss as to why you cannot at least ping your novell server,unless it is not assigned an address on the same network as your ipx ether network of the proper encapsulation..that would explain
the entire issue.

The pings work fine if you read the OP, but the result from
one router is missing.

At this point debugging ipx traffic and finding out what
network and encapsulations the netware machine supports is
the issue.
