How to overwrite screen

I'd like to be able to update a line on screen as a program executes. Can this be done in Tcl? Backing up the file position on stdout doesn't seem to work.
 
It's easy enough with Tk. I suppose that's not an option for you?

I don't think you can do it in the Tcl shell; at least, I don't know of any way.
