How do I open a .mdi (microsoft document image) file? I have the mdi printer on my machine, but it is always writing to .tif files instead of .mdi files for some reason. I now have someone else's .mdi file that I need to view, and I can't.

Any help appreciated.

Why do I need one? Why can't windows do it?

Good question. Likely a prioritization situation at MS. They'll do it as soon as a 3rd party makes a go of it and then shut them down.

There is one with office, probably need to put the set up CD in if you do not have office document imaging under the Microsoft Office >> Microsoft Office Tools and install it.

Adrian,

One what?

As I mentioned I already have the MS Document imaging printer installed.

linney,

Maybe you can be a bit more explicit, I saw nothing on that document that told me how to open a .mdi file.

Again, I have the MDI printer on my machine, but I cannot open a document from a printer, I need an application to do that.

It is not something I am familiar with, I just saw this comment in the linked article.

"In Office Document Imaging, you can open and save files in the MDI format as well as the Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) (Tagged Image File Format (TIFF): A high-resolution, tag-based graphics format. TIFF is used for the universal interchange of digital graphics.) format. Both formats are capable of storing text recognized by optical character recognition (OCR) (OCR: Translates images of text, such as scanned documents, into actual text characters. Also known as text recognition.) along with images".

And this.....

"MDI files can only be opened or edited in Office Document Imaging".

You might be able to get more information at the Office Forum?

hi dgillz, office document imaging is the program for reading MDI files that should be under Microsoft Office >> Microsoft Office Tools on your start menu. If it does not open automatically when you double click an MDI file it's probably not installed.

You'll need to put the office CD in and select the add remove components option, you should be able to find this in the list of components to install and select the option to run it from your computer or it may be easier just to set everything to run from your computer (does the same as selecting a complete install instead of a typical install when it was first installed)
