Hi, well that's the qustion:

How to make "no hypen" my default? I mostly like non-hypenated words in my document and am constantly going to character palette to "uncheck" the hypen.

Can I make no hypen my default?

*is the answer, check no hypen and save workspace?

Just uncheck it in the Paragraph Panel without any documents open.

Then in the Paragraph Styles make a new Paragraph style and have that selected.

This will now be the style that is used everytime you start a new document.

You could just turn off no hyphen and leave it at that, but because the hyphen being turned on is part of the Basic Paragraph Style, then any time your document is opened on somebody elses machine it will default back to the hyphen, as you can't override this style.

So if you make your own style then it will travel with the document, where a default style can't be overwritten so it would revert back to hyphens.

Make your own styles first with no documents open, including colours, character styles, object styles etc. and they will all be your default styles for any new document.

Excellent......thank you ......

That did the trick.

somewhat different but on the same subject, I would dearly love to have a javascript that would remove the hyphenation in all paragraph styles of a InDesign document. I've tried my hand at scripting and have seen how awesome it is. Unfortunately this one eludes me.

Well it can be any number of styles of any number of files(10, 20), I receive my files from the outside and any number of people have created, picked up, and applied styles to the text. The rule is not to hyphenate, unfortunately this is not the way the files are coming in. So I have to open every style and disable the hyphenation (this can be mind numbing).

The script would have to go through every single style in the file and disable the hyphenation.

Thanks for the reply

I got in contact with Steve Wareham and he wrote this script. I don't know the guy, it was through another website we made contact.

He says to copy this into a .jsx file

myDocument = app.activeDocument;
myParagraphStyles = myDocument.paragraphStyles;

for (i =0; i < myParagraphStyles.length; i ++)
{
myParagraphStyle = myParagraphStyles;
try{
myParagraphStyle.hyphenation = false;
}
catch(e){};
}

It is 4:00 AM here and I just tried this. The joy...it work just the way it should, perfect.

Thank you Eugene and Steve.

I googleed Steve's website it is devoted to scripting, very interesting.

Thanks again
