each packing slip is a record. I've created a portal which lists each item. I need to have an item number for each object. auto serial wont work cuz for each packing slip it needs to start at 1 any help is appreciated very much. thank you

If I read this right, the number you refer to doesn't sound like something you want to store permanently, as it'll change when new orders come in and you run the next batch.
If that's the case, I'd just create a script that gathered the current list, then have the script loop through them and place your number in a numeric field of your choice based on the number of times through the loop.

Auto Increment:
next value:[START1-1] increment by:[1]
START1-1
START1-2
START1-3..
...
START1-100456

is this what your looking for?

Machtenx,
I have a vaguely similar job but not in a portal - makes no real difference. Well, it might.
Find the relevant records (ie the packing slip group)
Sort if necessary
Replace NumField using the serial number option.

You can do this with an external script.

Cheers,
Paul J.
