How to let selected users to install selected software

I have been trying to allow selected users to install only selected application in windows 2000 professional and Windows XP computers but have not been successful so far. I am controlling the access to the computers from windows 2000 advanced server using active Directory service.
The only solution that I have so far (which is not what i want) is to make selected users a part of local administrative group and this has become a security nightmare. Please help me!!!

You can try making them a member of the local Power Users group...

The PU group is much safer...

If you have an MSI for the software distribute it with a GP0.

You could also use ZENworks for Desktops perfectly for this task. Running more stable and reliable than any similar product I´ve seen so far. Has also features which you don´t find in similar products though.
