Hi all,

I would like to install the Oracle8i (Enterprise/Standard edition) on my home PC. Does anyone know to to do that ?

I am just wondering if I can manage to install into my home PC, then I can practice using the SQL*PLus, PL/SQL, Report Builder, Form Builder, etc... which are able to connect to a few databases. Then this might very helpful to me to get involve into using Oracle more frequently.

Appreciate any updates ! thanks & regards,
CS

Most home PCs have Windows 95 or 98, whereas I'm fairly sure that Oracle servers can only be installed in Windows NT environments. On the other hand the Oracle client tools should run in Windows 95/98. This would allow you to practice if you have an Oracle server that you can connect to.

Isn't there a version of Oracle (Personal 8i, I think for PC's? I thought I had heard a friend mention that he had installed it at home. I could be wrong...

Ever notice that by the time that you realize that you ran a truncate script on the wrong instance, it is too late to stop it?

Terry is right. Personal Oracle is the product you want.

Hi,
I also am trying to install Oracle8i personal onto my windows 98 pc. The install went fine, up to a point. When SQL comes up, it asks for a password. I can not get through that point. When installing it asked for a "name.domain" that was also duplicated into a "SID" I keyed in "olympic". If I carriage return through the username, password, and host, it says it is defaulting to the default SID, but still asks for the password.

I am taking a class at a local comm college, and was told this software could be downloaded and used. The college is a 40 mile drive, and that's what I want to avoid.

Can anyone help me with this? Should I uninstall and reinstall entering something different at the "name.domain" box? Appreciate any help I can get, As I am two weeks overdue on a project.

sounds like you just need to create some users, you can login using the default oracle users and passwords to do this

user = system
password = manager

If you let the install procedure create you the default database (it looks like you did) then you can also login using the following user and password

user = scott
password = tiger

Hi, can someone share how to get the copy of Oracle8i Personal ? I tried to download from but seemed it's not available already !

I used to installed the Oracle8i Lite into my WindowsNT home pc and able to get into SQL*Plus, using system/manager@ODBC:polite.

Then everything stopped, I can't even make simple select statements. Can anyone help me, please ?

thanks a lots. thanks & regards,

I am also installing 8i Enterprise on my desktop. It is a clean install of NT 4.0 workstation, SP6 (no networking). 8i gets to the point that it copies the DB files, but when it trie to intialize, I get an error regarding MTS_DISPATCHERS. Before I made some changes and did a reinsatll of NT (complete, including reformatting the partion), I had this up and running fine. I had documented the process, but this time around it does not seem to work. I did not receive this error last time. I also tried installing 8i personal edition from my other CD pack, with the exact same results. This is really strange and a little frustrating. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, try this link for Pesonal edition for 98 and NT. You will probably have to join OTN (it's free).
I just downloaded both the NT and 98 version. If you only have a modem, this may not be practical. The NT version took about 30 minutes via a T1 line. You can also go here and order the CD pack:
The CD contains personal edition.
Hope this helps,
Gary

If the link to the Oracle store I provided does not work, try this:
Select 'Store'
Select 'Dataabase'
Select 'CD Packs'
I would probably select the 8.1.6 (rel 2) for NT. As I said it includes the Personal Edition CD as well as Enterprise.
Good luck...
