We're networking a printer using an HP Jet Direct-150x, connected via parallel cable to the printer and Ethernet cable to the network. (I know this is dumb, but) WHERE DOES THE HP SOFTWARE GET INSTALLED? AND HOW DOES THE PRINTER GET RECOGNIZED ON THE NETWORK? (fyi network is W2k server running as DC... 25 CALs).

In the old NT4 you had to go into the properties of the printer and then choose Add Port. There you should choose the Hewlett Packard network-Port. If you don't have the port you can install it. Don't know where you can get the .inf file though. If you do have it then you have to connect your printers mac address. It is also possible that you have to add the DLC protocol.
Maybe this will help you a little, should be similar in 2000 I hope.

As network administrator you will first configure the Jet Direct with an ip address and assign the printer to the port. You can do this from the fileserver or from your workstation as you are administrator? Since it uses TCP/IP you will see it as a part of the network but won't use a cal

When you add printer at the workstation select local printer. You will be told there is no local printer but continue on. You will be given an option to select a port. If you have the Jet Direct configured you'll have the option to create a port and HP JetDirect Port should be your first option. From this point you will be widard driven asking you minimal questions i.e. ip address or printer name. I usually select the Printer List button and the system will go out onto the IP network and find your Jet Direct and the ip address for you.

The rest is really a piece of cake. Make sure the printer is on or the JetDirect wizard will return a message there is no device
