First, I want to say that, as a beginner in AIX, I'm finding this site extremely helpful and my thanks to those who have responded to my questions. Here is another one...

When you are installing software from bundles on the AIX CDs (like App-Dev, Server, Client, Media Defines, etc) do you have to go thru each CD and do an install of a particular bundle from each CD (in other words, 4 times for each bundle)?

I ask because it seems that I have found part of the App-Dev bundle on CD1, and then some more on CD2, and so on.

Thanks in advance for any advice. (AIX 4.3.3.8)

As you install, the install procedure will prompt you for the CD's it needs. If the files it needs are on CD's 1 and 2 only (or 1 only, or 3 only, etc...), you will only be prompted for that CD.

Bill.

smolensk,

You will only need to select everything once, then when you install you will be prompted to change cd as required.

Hope that answers your question.

No, you don't have to install four times for each bundle.

Using smit (the graphical version of smitty) and assuming you keep the default of spanning media for the installation: when you put the first CD in and select App-Dev, for example, the installation will install what it can from the first CD. then it will ask you to put in a second CD and press return to continue. Once you swap the CDs and you are back at your terminal, click inside the message area and then press return. (The first time I did an install I didn't realize you had to click inside the message area before pressing return and the little man kept running and running and running until I finally pressed q!)

THANKS! So far, I've started everything from CD1, and it has never prompted me to enter another CD. I have the CDROM NFS mounted from another machine here locally because the one I'm installing to is remote.

So as long as I'm not asked for another CD, I can assume that it found everything it needed on CD1?

I'm not using the graphical version, I'm using SMITTY. I'm going to go back to CD1 and start the install of APP-DEV over and see if it prompts me for the next CD.
