The unix drive was on another system and now sits on a new system, with totaly differnet hardware.I need to setup the modem. I have tried searching for info but to no avail (OOO) Luck. I havent tried to set it up because I am a new new new newbie. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. This goes for the nic as well. It runs on SCO 5

Setting up modems can be extremely complicated.
What is the modem to be used for? Dial in? Dial out? Both? UUCP?
What kind of modem is it? Internal or External? Make? Model? Is it high speed (56k)? What port is it on?
Was the drive configured with a modem on the previous system?

yes the drive was configure with a modem on the other system. However the system that it sits on now has a different modem as well as a network card. It will be used to dial out and in. Thanks a bunch you guys this is really a blast. I normally help dozens of people with windows problems. I have decided to learn UNIX so far I see it to be a really exciting challenge and then having this forum to get some professional support makes it even more exciting. Anything to do with learning about computers and technology gets me excited.

Ok, since the drive was previously set up, many of the modem files will already be configured, which should save you some trouble.
To begin with, take a look at the /usr/lib/uucp/Devices file. Somewhere in the file (probably towards the bottom) you should see a line that starts with "ACU", and probably a similar line that starts with "Direct". Following the "ACU" and "Direct" on the same lines you will find the port that the previous modem was connected to, then a "-", then a port speed, then finally a dialer name. Please post a copy of those lines here.
Please also post which port (i.e. COM1, COM2, Digiboard Port 1, or whatever) the modem will be using, whether the modem is internal or external, and the brand of modem.
To properly install the modem you will need to configure (or at least verify the settings of) /etc/gettydefs, /etc/inittab, one of the files in /etc/conf/init.d (which one depends on the port used), and /usr/lib/uucp/Devices. You may also need to configure a dialer program for the modem.
For installing the NIC, you may or may not need a special driver diskette provided by the manufacturer. You need to find the card documentation that tells specifically how to install it on SCO Openserver 5.

ok Thanks alot so far guys. I have some of the info you all requested. The new Motherboard is a Biostar M7VIG-D Board it has a onboard nic and modem. The modem is a HSP56 MR PCtel modem and the nic is a VIA PCI 10/100Mb Fast Ethernet Adapter.I saw some files on the Motherboard cd that i can probably email you all so you can see what the file contains, there are some linux info on it I dont know if it would be useful.Let me know.As I mentioned earlier I am a new, new,new, new, newbie, so as broken down and as simple as possible is the response would be greatly appreciated. Let me tell you how far I ahve reached. I did the mkdev modem and got to a particular screen, and I did the netconfig and also got to a screen. I will have the info I saw there available to you all soon. To navigate in unix I cant do that so well, I can do a "ls" and a "cd" but to actually get to read like the devices files as you mentioned I dont know the command I have tried the cat command but that doesnt work so I cant get you the info in that file or any other of the files you told me to look at such as the /usr/lib/uucp/Devices or the etc/gettydefs areas so cuold I plaese get some direction in this area as well. A short while ago I found a site with some basics in unix so I will follow that and see if I can get it there, or if you recommend any site that i can get some basic with be greatly appreciated.

To find the TA#111067 do the following:
1) Go to the SCO support site: 2) Type 111067 in the Search Text (optional) textbox
3) Choose TA # in the Search by listbox
4) Click the Search button

Ok I did find the TA# thanks! However I cant navigate that well in unix. I can cd and ls but however when I try to look at the file by using cat I cant see the file I need some help on this one please.

Blank screen? no such file or directory?
Is the Etherlink XL PCI (3c900) the card that is in the new machine or old one? (tab and escape keys are used for navigating in scoadmin and netconfig).

Ok, with as little experience as you seem to have using UNIX, I recommend you hire a consultant to help you with these installs and start to show you the ropes.
With the trouble you are having looking at the contents of some of the files I have asked about, it would be unwise for you to try to edit them and make configuration changes yourself.
I know that consultants cost money, which you are probably trying to avoid, but if you mess something up due to your inexperience, it is likely to cost you even more money to fix it. For a consultant to install the NIC and modem for you should only take them a couple of hours, so that expense should not be unreasonably high. You do want to be sure that the consultant is experienced with SCO before you hire them however.

Hey I can see where you are coming from, I just started to read those links in depth today and I can see why you can say this I do understand. I will read up some more, then I will come back here if need be to get the rest of the info.
From what I see in those links there is a lot of help there the same thing that you guys are trying to help me with, just not as personal, but thanks alot and I will be back in a day or so after I have read my head off

If you will look closely, the ACU entries and Direct entries have # in front of them. The pound sign is to tell the system to ignore the line.
You are going to want one line, probably hand generated rather than using one of the canned ones.
I generally use (3.2v4.2 version) (because my stuff is 96)
ACU tty1A - 9600 hayes2400 (incoming port 1A (modem))
and
Direct tty1a - 9600 direct (outgoing port serial to modem)
The hayes2400 points to the initialization strings in the Dialers file and the dialHA24 would use a dedicated file.
Then you have the /etc/inittab file that will have a speed token for the dialin port speed. The token will refer to one of the speeds and characteristics of the line as listed in /etc/gettydefs.
Then there is the enabling of the dial in line, and setting the terminal type in /etc/ttytype. And modifying the user .profile to force it to use the ttytype you set.

Do you know which COM port the modem is using?
COM1 will use tty1A and tty1a

The above is a very basic modem configuration. If you will be utilizing the modem at a high capacity you will eventually want to replace the hayes2400 dialer (on the ACU line) with a dialer specifically customized for your modem and needs. You should also note that there is other important information regarding high speed modems in the "adding modems" chapter of your SCO Openserver Handbook.
