How to increase a full-text index's population speed ?

I am populating full-text catalogs. It takes days already. Is it somehow I can improve the speed of this process?

Could you supply more info on your situation. What type of field(s) are being indexed, how large is the table ... Thanks

I check all catalogs today morning. Most of them is finished the population. But one is still running for 3rd day.

This catalog has only one table. Table has about 4,5 million records; the index on column with varchar type.
I read about [sp_fulltext_service ‘resource_usage’] system stored procedure. One thing wasn’t clear to me: this improvement for population time or only for the time of queries?

I forgot to mention that I have SQL Server 2000 SP2 on W2K server.
