Just acquired a hand-me-down iMac from my wife - she got a loaded G5 tower w/flat panel display etc. etc. etc. as an early Christmas gift - but can't find the documentation for it. I'm not even sure when we purchased it. It has more than 256 MB of RAM but only shows 256 MB on boot. Rather than argue with it, thought I'd just buy new RAM sticks and go from there - but don't know what to buy until I identify the machine.

Here's what's on the back (on a label):

Family # M5521
Serial # XA01006UJ8B
IMac DV 400 MHz / 512k L3 Cache / 64 MB SDRAM / 10 GB HD / DVD / 56K Modem / Grape

In looking at the Apple site and the specs for older iMacs found there, it looks like I can buy PC100 RAM for all but the one model which requires SO-DRAM (whatever THAT is! <g>).

Any assistance or pointers to a site to help me identify this thing would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Tom

Yes the G3 iMacs at 350 Mhz and over use PC-100 2-2-2 RAM

as an exampe

SO-DIMMs are most often used in notebooks, the 233 to 333 Mhz iMacs were based of Apple's laptops

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Using just the info that you posted, you can go to most RAM manufacturer's web sites to determine which kind can be installed. For example: crucial.com

Why is everyone in this forum responding to me as picklefish?

The iMac DV takes standard PC100 or PC133 SDram just like a lot of Pentium 3/ Celeron machines. Get the better quality stuff and you should be OK.
