How to I reference a file that is located in a different drive?

Hello:

How to I reference a file that is located in a different drive? My site located under C:\inetpub\

http://wwwroot.

Since the C: drive has limited space so I put some of my files e.g., pdf, interactive flash, word, wmv...etc. in a D:\MyFiles drive. But unable to get it to work.

<a href="pdf/myfile.pdf">my pdf</a> this works only when files located on the same C:drive

Please advice.

Hi

You want to access those files though the web server, using HTTP ?

If yes, the easiest is to create a link to directory D:\MyFiles in C:\inetpub\

http://wwwroot.

Then for example D:\MyFiles\pdf\myfile.pdf will be available also as C:\inetpub\

http://wwwroot\MyFiles\pdf\myfile.pdf

so you will be able to link to it as [tt]<a href="MyFiles/pdf/myfile.pdf">[/tt].

Yes, using HTTP to open up those files. Link to Directory is network stuff I suppose? Am I right? I guess I need to configure on the server side?...I have to look it up because I am not familiar with what you mentioned.

Or create a subdomain in IIS that has the 'external' location as the document root for the subdomain.

Nope. Is filesystem stuff. In a Command Prompt window type [tt]mklink /?[/tt] to find out more on usage.

You can also add a virtual directory in your IIS site. You give it an alias and a physical directory and then address it as

http://domain/alias/...

as if there was an alias folder in

http://wwwroot.

This way IIS can bind many drives into Site, without adding any type of link in the filesystem. It's neither better nor worse, but doing it in IIS configuration you have a documentation of where that linking comes from. If you add a folder on the filesystem level you might forget later, how you did it and at the time you migrate to another server nobody knows what has to move.
