how to hide text in the console? 1

I am trying to write a program which is going to ask all users for password. It will be a console application. I am curius if there exists a function which can modify output of a console in such way:

$./a.out
$Enter password
$******* /*We are entering f.ex tektips (7 letters) but on the screen we see 7 stars*/

I know on Windows you can use the getch() command, but I've never tried doing that on UNIX.

You need to be precise about which OS and compiler.
All that I can make out at the moment is that it might be some flavour of unix.

My OS is Mandrake. I am not using separate compiler just standard gcc.

I think using the termios setting as shown here

to turn echoing on and off would probably do the job.

Ncurses would also work, but seems heavy if all you want to do is suppress echoing for one line of input.
