Hi all,

I must handle the media only one time, because the tape is quite old (DLT1) and he is from year 2001.
So instead of using scanner I have made a raw copy of the 4mm tape using dd, and I've positioned it on a disk area.

Now I want to use Legato Networker to scanner the HD copy, but I'm not sure of the format he must have to be scanned.

I've tried to configure a file device but I'd a lot of error because probably he create the media in a different way.

Someone have similar experience?

I'm actually using Windows 2003 with legato Networker 7.4 but I can install any windows/linux version or Networker version.

The only thing I cannot do is reading the tape twice.

Hello,

the only way to get a readable copy is to clone the cartridge to a new media.

But you must read your dlt one more time...

I can probably write back with dd on a new media from the HD, but I'm wondering if legato can manage it even if is on the HD, it will be more simple because is more than 1 thousand media and I don't want to read and write back 1000 media, something like create a fake dlt, even on unix.

^_^

Why so strange? - Clone the media to an (advanced) file device and off you go....

Hi 605,

basically because these media are not inside the client index neither in the mm, so I cannot start a clone process directly, but I must first scan them and then clone them ( and this is 2 read of the same tape), so I have thinked about two solution:

>First do a DD of the tapes on a file device and then read it with networker, but it seems not to work.

>Second do a scan | uasm but I'm not sure of the syntax it must have so I'm trying to understand how I can convert the dd output in a way that legato caan understand.

I'm sorry to bother you, but is a very strange thing to do, and I never been in this trouble -.-

I am not able to make any statement about the dd solution.

scanner | uasm -r to the best of my knowledge will simply not work because it will recover the backed up files but not the backups.

I am not sure what you are talking about ...
- scanning in one piece of media twice would not rectify any further effort
- but you obviously want to convert more than 1k tapes and move their contents to a disk media, correct?

I do not know your setup but this sound strange. It would only make sense, if the media is still in the media index. However, in this case, you do not need to scan it at all.
Just clone or stage the save sets/volume.

If you do not have the media in your index at all, let me suggest that you install a new server, do a NW DR of the old media index and proceed as described above.

Yes, probably I will request the meida index from the server that are oversea, hoping that they are still keeping it ^_^

Thanks anyway
