Right now, after i shut down my machine, it goes to the prompt
"It is now safe to shutdown your machine"

Optimally i want the machine to power off, right away..
Its just a minor annoyance, having to press the power button to shutdown the machine.

Is there a way to get it to shut down and POWER down?

Machine is running Windows XP, if that matters.

Any replies are appreciated!

Thanks!

You need to go into BIOS and change the operation of the Power Button from Instant Off to Soft Off after 4 seconds and make sure that the ACPI Power support settings are correct. This should then permit your computer to fully power down by Windows. On newer PCs, pressing the power button will also set Windows into a controlled shutdown.

How old is the motherboard? Is this a "clean" install of XP, or an up-grade?

Its a Duron CPU based motherboard, probably about 3-4 years old. (Have to open the box up to see the exact specs / model type... )

And well, the XP install is a Clean install.

Is your PC HAL set as ACPI Compatible? If not, the machine won't power itself off. To check if you are using ACPI compatible HAL (hardware abstraction layer, fire up Device manager, and check under 'Computer' (usually the top entry). It will say something like 'Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC'. If it doesn't then you will need to change the HAL - let me know if you need instruction on how to do this.

Under Device manager, under Computer all it says is

"Standard Pc"

nothing else.. So do i need to update the HAL? And if so how?

Please advise.

Thanks!

Psyke:

1. Click Start and then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, click Power Options.
3. Click the APM tab.
4. Check to select the Enable Advanced Power Management Support check box, and then click OK.

Thanks GreyTed.

That did the trick.

Many thanks!
