Not being sure how saving them in Word 2003 format is going to improve your likeness of Word 2007, but use Word Options, Save tab [Alt+F, I, S] and change the Save Files in the Format option to Word 97-2003 doc.
Click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Word Options.
Click Save.
Under Save documents, next to Save files in this format, select Word 2003-97 Document (*.doc).
If you realy dislike 2007, changing the file format of saved documents is unlikely to change that; if anything it will make you dislike it more because some things you do may get thrown away when you save.
Enjoy,
Tony

You can change the default save format for Word documents. (Excel too).
Click the Office button in the upper left corner. Then click on "Word Options" at the bottom of the window. then click on Save, then change "Save files in this format" to "Word 97-2003 document .doc".
As a follow up for the above problem...
I can't seem to set my default saving format for MSWord to "doc".
I've tried the option from tf1 and paulus631...
Every time I shut down MSword and start it again, the default saving format is back to "docx"
I ran an RSOP on the network and no GPO settings are active for my user.
I've tried an VB-Script to set the registry key: HKCU\Software\Mricrosoft\Office\12.0\word\options\DefaultFormat to "doc". And although I can verify this setting is in the registry, MSWord still want's to save as an docx...
There is no StartUp template, which sets the option (in fact there are no startup templates at all). I've thrown away the normal.dotx file.. still no change...
Am I forgetting something ? Are there any more options to configure MSword on startup ?
You may have damaged your Word installation. I have my default document save format set to Word 97-2003 Word Document (*.doc), and I don't even have the registry setting you mentioned above.
Try it again, slowly. You don't change the setting when you're saving a file. You click the round Office Button at the upper left, then DO NOT click Save.
Click the "Word Options" button at the lower right of the pop-up menu next to the Exit button. Now click the Save button on the right, and change the default save format. This should change it permanently.
If that doesn't work, you may have to repair your Word installation. Hope this helps.
