My windows 95 machine boots ok shows the splash screen and then goes right to the C:> prompt. I get nothing when I type in win I can't even find the msdos.sys file to check for the bootgui= line? Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks
Did you ensure that MSDOS.SYS is not hidden? Do "attrib -h -r -s -a msdos.sys" to ensure that you can see and read it.

What exactly happens when you type "win"? Does it attempt to start windows or do you get a bad command?

Can you boot into Safe Mode?

Can't get into safe mode and yes i used the attrib command and when i type in win i get bad command...
thanks
Check your path to ensure that \WINDOWS and \WINDOWS\COMMAND are listed. Enter "SET" (no quotes) at the prompt and look for the PATH variable. If C:\WINDOWS and the COMMAND directories aren't listed then enter "SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND" (no quotes). Do the ATTRIB command suggested by pmkincaid. If a DIR MSDOS.SYS shows "no files found" do a CD WINDOWS and do a DIR WIN.COM. If WIN.COM or the windows directory doesn't exist you will have to reinstall Windows and hope for the best.
If WIN.COM exists but MSDOS.SYS doesn't, the solution may be as simple as copying MSDOS.SYS from a similar system and hoping for the best. The OS won't load the Windows GUI without a valid MSDOS.SYS in the root of the boot drive, nor will it load if MSDOS.SYS contains the line BOOTGUI=0 (or NO or FALSE).
You may end up reinstalling Windows, anyway. Good luck and happy holidays.
I agree with alt255, try to copy msdos.sys from a other system otherwise, try to install win95 over the old one, if everything goes right your settings will stay.
and hopefully your problem is fixed

good luck, and a happy and bugfree 2000

I have had this problem several times and it is usually a new program installed that sets the path using the path statement. e.g. PATH=c:\someprogram etc

This is usually at the end of autoexec.bat and then the standard path to windows and windows\command is lost. Ensure that a SET PATH command is used as per Alt255 above.
The key is the %path% which will ensure that the existing path (e.g. C:\windows) is added to any further path that any other program may wish to add to the path. Should only require SET PATH=%PATH%;c:\someprogram etc. Make sure you do not call any other path statements after this one and all should be well.
