Hi,

Maybe this is a dumb question, but how do I find out the number of open ports on my system. We just had a tech in here who did it in one location, and came up with a bunch of ports I didn't know were open. He wouldn't tell me how to do it even though we're paying him 10 grand to upgrade our system. Now I am at our other location just to see if we have any ports open. Anyways, how would one do this? I noticed he went into 'maintenance' on the phone, but that's about all I got.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Go into maintenance -> Port/DN status

It should start with P0101, with an extension. You can press the "State" button. If it says "Unequipped", then it is generall available (I say generally, because some modules, such as an ASM, will show 16 ports, but only 8 are "live" per ASM).

Also, if the "Show" (upper right) triangle is not lit up for a port, that is an indication that it is not available.

Correction... I meant to say that is the "show" triangle is not lit up, that it is available (not in use)

Thanks bwtc.

I don't actually see a show triangle, but I found a bunch of lines using the previous method. Also, I noticed at one point the numbers change from extensions to something similar to 'L023'. Are these analog lines?

L is a line.

Depending on your configuration, you will go from 0101-0132 to 0201-?, 0301-?, etc.

Also, note that if you have a NAM, that will take up a range of port numbers. These are not physical ports, so you can't count them.

Hey thanks...once again I have another question. It would take me 10 years to learn all this stuff. So however many lines I have is how many calls can be taking place at one time? Are lines consider external or internal? Also I noticed when going through the ports I noticed there is '>B2' and when pressed changes to '>B1'. Do you know what this means, and what the second number means? I'm pretty sure the B2 number is the extension.

Is this port information 100% accurate? I punched down to a port that said it was open with an extension of 271. Once the phone booted up I pressed feature *0 to get the extension of the phone, and it was changed to 295.

Anyways, I understand if you don't have an answer to all these questions as I have a million of them. I really appreciate any/all the help you can give me.

If you have set relocation turned on, you cannot rely on the extension that is provided when looking at port status for an available port.

The B1 extension is the actual extension (the B2 softkey will display to show you the B2).

The B2 is a "virtual" extension that is linked to your extension that will allow multiple calls to go to your phone (and is also required for system programming).

If set relocation is ON then the phone that is plugged in will take the extension that it is programmed to.
