I'm wondering if anyone knows how to feather text in Adobe Illustrator.

What I want to do is feather a font 2 pixels, but I really just want the outline of the font to be offset to the inside 2 pixels.

I've tried to offset the path of the text, but it only offsets it to the outside. I'm a novice with Illustrator, so I really have no clue.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

what version are you using, CS, VS2?

You can enter a negative value to offset to the inside.

Thanks blueark! That did it. I didn't know you could do a negative offset...simple.

And thanks apepp. I appreciate both of your help!

One more question...

So I got my logo how I want it to be. How do I reduce the size for the internet so that the text doesn't lose quality. I'm trying to save it as a tranparent gif so that the text paths can be scaled up and down. But it seems like this isn't happening, and the text becomes difficult to read when scaled.

Thanks again for your help.

Once you save your artwork as a bitmap format, such as GIF, scaling isn't really an option anymore. You should scale the artwork before saving as a GIF to get the best quality.

1: File > Save For Web
2: Select GIF and check transparency.
3: Click on the Image Size tab
4: Adjust as required and press Apply.

Also, by default, anti-aliasing is enabled, so if you place your GIF on anything but a white background, there will be a noticable halo around the letters. You can turn anti-aliasing off (in the Image Size tab), or you can click on Matte and choose a different background color.

Alternatively, you can save a PNG file instead for better transparency, but Internet Explorer doesn't display the transparency properly by default. It can be done, but it's a whole new can of worms...
