How to Factory reset a password protected Summit x450a-48t

Hi all,

I have a Summit x450a-48t that I want to factory reset but it is currently password protected. This switch was retrieved from our store room however no one knows how the password got on it. or what it could possible be.

I logged into the bootstrap but I do not see any option to do a factory reset. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Not sure why you haven't gotten a response, but here goes:

Connect to the Switch via the console port.
Power the switch on.
When it says "Press and hold the <spacebar> to enter the bootrom" hold the spacebar.
You should shortly get to a "BootRom>" prompt.
Type "config none" and press enter.
Type "boot" and press enter.

This should allow you to login with the default username, "admin" and no password, it will probably go through the automatic setup when you log in.

Thanks for responding but I'm afraid your suggestion did not work. When I entered "config none" I receive the following:
BootStrap > config none
config: Command not found. Try 'h' for help!

BootStrap > unconfigure switch all
unconfigure: Command not found. Try 'h' for help!

I have also tried:

But these did not work either. I get the following when I hit "d":
BootStrap > d
d: not enough arguments
usage: d [-bhwdsrx] adr [cnt]

I even tried:
BootStrap > d f
Error when reading memory!
0000000f 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................

Not sure where I am going wrong.

Ooooh. Didn't realise there is a difference. Another co-worker actually got the pw reset but he is new to Extreme as well and could not replicate the procedure.

As soon as I get my hands on a spare switch I will test your suggestion but I guess this Thread can be marked as Complete/Answered.

I just did this, and I had quite a bit of trouble. So for the benefit of other users I am going to follow this up with what worked for me.

Connect console cable,
9600 baud N/8/1 - I used windows Hyperterminal.
Hold down spacebar.
Power cycle the switch.

The unit starts booting it's bootstrap.

BOOTSTRAP Version 1.1.0 (Build 2) by Release_Master Thu 10/09/03
Copyright 2003, Extreme Networks, Inc.

We don't want bootstrap, we want the second part, the bootloader. So type boot
BOOTSTRAP> boot
Starting Bootloader ...
The unit continues booting.
BOOTLOADER Version 1.2.0 (Build 3) by release-manager Fri 11/18/05
Copyright 2003, Extreme Networks, Inc.
Then type
BOOTLOADER> use config def

To tell the unit to used it's default config with no password.

Type boot
The unit boots and the username admin pw is then blank

Pretty easy. Unfortunately this does not save the config the switch had on it before you started, but that might be there in the directory for hacking. If someone knows how to get the old config and take the PW out post it.

For other versions of extreme switches I found this method. Easier.
Posted here for completeness.

Password reset procedure:

Connect switch to local serial console;
Cold boot your device (power of the device, wait a minute, power on the device);
In the very beginning of the boot process press Space to enter boot menu;
Follow this procedure to remove any configuration and passwords:
[ol 1]
[li] Press “1” to select primary boot image;[/li]
[li] Press “k” to erase current configuration;[/li]
[li] Press “d” to load default configuration;[/li]
[li] Press “f” to load switch with reset config;[/li]
[/ol]
The result of this procedure is a switch with default login: admin and an empty password.
