how to dump 1

Our Unix 5.1 system has hung on us twice with a mail message saying there was a problem while writing to the disk during a dump. Disk space is fine. Field engineer suggested halting the system and doing a dump vice a shutdown. He could tell me how to halt the system but didn't know how to initiate the dump form the >

Never heard of being able to do a dump from the >>> prompt.

Have you tried running fsck in single user mode to check that the disk your dumping to is ok?
