Good morning all:
I started this new thread so I can find the answers easily. I have a very basic question to ask:

Please remind me how do I do a complete new instal of W98SE on my machine that currently has a badly corrupted copy of it on the system?

I have recently (within the past 2 weeks) done an instal of the OS over the top of the existing system, but the various problems remain.

I have backed up all my data so am ready. I just don't reember the best way to do it.

Put the 98SE CD-ROM in your PC then boot up. Hopefully your PC supports CD-ROM booting, you will then get a menu up which lets you choose whether to run setup or not and format the hard drive.

If you can't boot to a cd, try this: If you have a Win98 start-up disk (if not, make one), boot to dos, the at c:/, type c:/deltree windows (or just format c:/ if you want to format the whole drive). After windows is deleted, boot to the start-up disk with cd-rom support. After bootup, find your cd-rom drive (E or F) with the Win98SE cd and type x:/setup.

Is your Windows 98 CD and upgrade or full version? Do you have the driver cds for the video, modem, audio etc?

If the CD is a Full, just put the Windows Startup floppy disk in and start the comptr. At the first prompt, choose "Start Comptr Without CD ROM Support", press the enter key and at the A:\ type FDISK. That will show you the partitions on your drive. For the best results on a clean reinstall, choose to remove each partition one at a time until there are no partitions left on the drive. Restart the comptr.

Now, back to the A:\ FDISK Choose Large Disk Suppport, and then choose to create One Primary DOS Partition. With full disk support. Restart the comptr.

Back to the A:\ again and this time type FORMAT C: press the enter key and let it format. When done it will ask you to name the volume, choose None. Restart the comptr.

This time at the first prompt select "Start Comptr With CD Rom Support", put the Windows 98 CD in and press the enter key. It may start the install or take you to an A:\ if so just type SETUP.EXE, press the enter key and let Windows install.

After Windows is reinstall, you will have to reinstall the drivers for the Video, Modem etc.

If the Windows CD is an upgrade, it will ask you to insert the CD from the Previous edition. Actually, any Windows 95 CD will work.

I also should have mentioned that you should disconnect any printer, scanner, camera etc currently connected to the comptr. This will have to be reinstalled later.

thank youu very much for the heads up on the process - one has occassion to do it so rarely that one forgets.
