Is it possible to divide and existing shape (say a rectangle) into smaller evenly sized rectangles, and be able to specify the size of each smaller shape (and the distance between them)?

Thanks!

first make a rectangle and then make another one somewhere else. go to object/blen/blend options here u can choose either numbers of rectangles between those two you allready have or the distance. u can make the other rectangle smaler or bigger and illustrator will gradually change the object size. now go back to the objects..and sellect both of them. go to object/blend/make and u shuld have more rectangles

Erm.... thanks but that seems a bit long -winded. Got a one-step method?

I don't think there's a specific tool/filter to do it, but individual cases probably have their own workarounds. In this case, consider using the Rectangle Grid Tool which is hidden behind the Line Segment tool (click and hold the line tool to see it).
