Hi, I need to determine the database size for an exchange 2000 installation (not enterprise!), with only the default mailstore. I have read which tells me to check for event ID 1221. Event ID 1221 tells me there is 260mb free (eek!), but the priv1.edb file which contains the mailstore is less than 7gb in size!! Which is correct?

Thanks,

Adrian.

they are both correct, they are reporting different infomation.. Use Windows Explorer to look at the size of the files, just like you would for any file. In this case, you said just under 7GB.

The 260 MB free, is the amount of space in the 7GB file that Exchange is not currently using. Having free space in an Exchange file is normal and is usually removed by the Exchange automated utilities. If this is a problem, you can manally defrag the Exchange databases.

If you are trying to determine how close you are to the Physical limitations of Exchange Standard editions Database size, use the Windows Explorer result of 7GB.

Defragmenting that Database will likely decrease your Database by about 200MB or more (since you have 260MB of unused space in that 7GB database)
