I have created a network connection to a folder on a drive on this (local) computer somehow.

It shows up in the "My Network Places" dialog and any attempts to delete the connection seem as
though they are going to delete the folder and its contents.

Can I delete this entry without deleting the folder and its contents?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm not quite sure I understand, but if its shared and you don't want it try going to the folder itself and un-sharing it.

Open Explorer and navigate to the real location of the folder, right click on it, and choose Properties. look for the sharing Tab, and un-check the Share This folder box.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Best check this as I only have my Vista Machine here, but in XP the list of folders maintained in network places is just a list of Shortcuts to the folders you have visited on the network.
When you delete one, you just delete the shortcut not the remote folder.

This is also true for 'Local' folders in the List

If you open the network neighbourhood icon and drill down to an actual e.g. Windows LAN/Workgroup/Network machine/drive/folder, then you can (if you have the correct privileges) delete folders on other machines.

Backup the folder and save it elsewhere. Then see what happens when you try the deletion from Network Places.

Hi all:

I ended up following Linney's suggestion and moving the
contents of the folder out and deleting it in the "My Network Places" dialog.

It turned out NOT to be a shortcut!
Somehow the actual folder was showing up here and was in fact deleted when I deleted the entry in the "My Network" folder.

I re-created the folder, put the contents back and defragged..

Everything seems fixed. BTW, chkdsk showed no disk error before or after the operation.

I had searched for the sharename string in the registry with no result, and I have no idea how this entry even got created there.

Thanks all for the comments..!
I'd give a star, but didn't see the link to do it...
