Hi:
I am using MS Project 2007 Professional (stand-alone) and have inserted several schedules into a master schedule with the link checkbox checked. I deleted one schedule from this group, but the master schedule still thinks it is there and is displaying tasks and work from this deleted sub-schedule under task and resource usage views. How can I get rid of this "phantom schedule", so that the master starts displaying tasks and calculating correctly again?

Thanks,
David

Did you delete the file completely? Do you have SP-3 installed to Project 2007? I'm assuming you are getting error messages when you open the master file? Are the files also linked through a resource pool?

Hi Julie:
Thanks for answering. Yes we are using MSP 2007 SP3 (I checked and verified). The “phantom” file was renamed and no longer exists. For example the current file name “CSR Schedule“ was originally named “CSR Work”. The file CSR Work no longer exists. However, within the Master project the tasks are duplicated with project names of CSR Work and CSR Schedule. We are also using a resource pool which is defined within the master schedule. I am generally not getting an error on project startup, however I did get an error when attempting to open up the project as a NEW master project. Then it complains that the CSR Work file doesn’t exist.

I assume this old schedule name is stored in the .mpp file metadata somehow. Is it possible to delete it manually from somewhere in the file? Or do we have to start out and create a new master file?

Thanks,
David

The best bet is to create a new master project. Deleting, renaming, or moving files attached to a pool (or master) is a quick recipe for corruption. Sorry - no quick fixes on this one.

OK Julie. Thanks. While I have your attention. Let me ask you how I should be doing this. I have a resource pool and a master schedule with 4 or 5 schedules inserted / linked to it. They are stored on the LAN and we have to VPN to this LAN from home, so response time is a bit slow. Is it possible to make a copy of the .mpp files inserted into the master and update them locally on our individual C drives, then save them back to the LAN server, copying over the original file inserted into the master? Assuming that we don't change the file name or location of the inserted .mpp file, will this work?

Thanks,
David

I'd suggest saving all files - sharer and pool into a folder. Work on the files locally and upload the entire folder structure - replacing all files.
