Hello and welcome, I am a noob to the board and Legato Systems. I just recently took over a position that is responsible for doing the backups. The person before was fired so I have very few people I can ask questions too.. I am hoping this board is able to help me, and so far it has.

Now for the question, I was asked by clients for reports. They are looking for what directories are getting backed up, the size of that directory and the most recent date it was backed up. I have played with mminfo and did some basic reports. It shows somewhat the right data I am looking for, but if i gave that to a customer they would not know what to do with it as its very long and not clear on the details.

Can anyone offer me any help on how to do this? or point me in the direction on what i need to read to understand the reporting with Legato?

Thanks

Cliffs: I am noob, looking for reporting help.

take a look to "nsradmin" tool and there are some thread here related to the same thing.

mminfo is perfect for save set information and their size. The general usage is

mminfo -q "query" -r "report"

All other reports like 'mminfo -v' are nothing else but shortcuts using the specific mminfo command in the background. Please have a look at the manpage (aka as NetWorker Command Reference) for details about the parameters.

However, mminfo will not list file information. This is a two-step process:

1. Use mminfo to find the last backup of the save set and report the savetime as well. For instance you may use
mminfo -q "query" -r "name,ssid,nsavetime"

2. Use "nsrinfo client_name | grep nsavetime > file" to save the file list to a file.

I prefer using the UNIX timestamp (seconds) because it is independent from any time format.

alrighty i am understanding the basics of doing a search using mminfo

mminfo -xc, -r'client,name, totalsize(15),sscomp(22)' -q 'group=Cleveland,!incomplete,savetime>=last week' > cleveland.txt

this would give me a decent report... is there anyway to summarize the client? ie only have one listing for the client and then the total backups for the client?

another question, is there a way to easily report on a storage node... find out whats on it, find out how much space it consumes. we have a main storage node then a secondary at a remote location and i trying to see whats all on the remote location

thanks for your help

Sure, just put add "client=client_name" to the -q options.

2. is there a way to easily report on a storage node...
No, not for a storage node. However, if you only have media from a specific pool at this node, this is easy to accomplish. Again, a case for mminfo.

Another option is the NetWorker Management Console which includes built in reports, some with a drill-down capability. You can export to .csv, .html, etc. Of course there is an associated cost but they have been giving it away to new clients, you might be able to work a deal.

excellent I will talk to them about that, it could be beneficial to the company. thanks!
