How to create password on usb drive

Hi,

I have a USB drive that I use in several locations.
Is there a way to insert a password on the usb drive, so that if anyone catches it, has to insert password to access data?

Some USB flash drives come with security password software already available on the drive.

What type of drive and what is the file system, NTFS or FAT, FAT32?

The problem with zipping is that I can do that on folders and I would like to do that on the entire usb drive.

The file system is FAT32 now, but I can change it to the fs I want.

With NTFS, things like Permissions and Encryption may come in to play and may offer you some alternatives, but access from older operating systems (9x or MS-DOS) to the drive will be lost.

As far as only zipping folders is concerned, your whole drive (E: or whatever), is one big folder in many respects, so you could have just one top level folder on E: and zip/compress that. It will however slow down access to the files within such a folder.

There is a limit of 4GB on fat so creating a zipped archive won't work if it will be larger than 4gb.

Truecrypt cannot encrypt existing data it formats the drive and creates an encrypted folder on the drive.

Lockngo encrypts the file system of the usb drive and takes about 30 seconds to lock a 500GB drive. We have just purchased this for 32 500GB usb drives and it works really well.
