How to create a template in MS Word 2003?

Goal:
I am trying to create a standard template in MS Word 2003 for creating proposals with a standard coverpage and standard page 2. Cover page and Page 2 are not exactly the same hence I need to create both, and the Page 2 logo, border needs to appear on the rest of the pages of the document. I also need to lock in the logo, border on the Cover page and page 2 so that no one can shift it.

Action:
I have saved the file that I have created as a .dot file under the templates folder.

Problem:
1) When I open the .dot file, and start creating my proposal from the template, the logo, border on cover page and 2 are not locked in so people can move it.
2) When I go on to page 3 to continue creating the proposal, page 2 logo and standard border does not appear on page 3 or any other consecutive pages. How can I make page 2 the standard for the following pages?

Yes, absolutely.

Do NOT open the .dot file. Once you have created a proper template file, to USE it you NEVER open it. Lock the sucker, make it read-only to anyone but you. There are ways to safe guard it to a certain extent, but that is another topic. At the very least, make it read only. To use a template properly they are cloned. Use File, New, and choose the template. Do NOT open the .dot file to use a template, as this is a complete and utter waste of the purpose of a template file. This is why the stuff is not locked! You are opening the original. Oh, and how are you "locking" it?

Use Sections. Make Section 1 contain the cover page, and Page 2. Then make a new section (it will be "2"). Use Tools > Protect document to protect Section 1. Uncheck Section 2.

More details are need regarding the logo on subsequent pages. Is this logo in a Header?

Thanks so much Gerry for taking the time to answer my question.

I think there is a little bit of miscommunication here, when I said I opened the .dot file, I did not mean directly going to the templates folder. What I meant was -- I went to File, New and opened the .dot template that I created. Sorry about the confusion.

What I have tried now and is seeming to work for the most part is I have put the logo, image and border I want on the cover page. For the 2nd page, I have included the logo as the header and have selected the option where the header starts to show from the 2nd page on. So, 2nd page and the consecutive pages use the header that I want. -- Problem solved there!!!

I am still having some problem with getting the border (which is an object I am importing in on the coverpage). I would like for that border to appear on all consecutive pages but I am not sure how to do that?

I tried going to Borders and Shadow and under Page Border tried replicating the border with the color I need but unfortunately, it doesn't allow for a width larger than 6 points. And I need a width that's much larger than 6 points.

Do you have any recommendations as to how I could do that???[/bold]
