Hello,

This might sound odd, but we need to create network lag for testing a game we have in development.

Is there any way of doing this with software?
My simple idea was to unplug the cable from the router and plug back in

You could also put a hard kink in a cat5 line, causing retransmits...

You can write a PERL script using Net::RawIP that routes packets between your two endpoints and insert delay in the script.

Thanks for the replies

I like the kink idea :) but I think I will investigate the perl script idea

Whatever language your developers are using, they should be able to script something that will do the job. it should be a simple enough script.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

I would think it tough to script in enough randomness to accurately mimic real-world conditions... Maybe not.

You could also have people on your network listen to streaming audio or watch streaming video. Both of those activities induce latency. As for making it like the real world conditions you could have the number of users vary to simulate peak and low load conditions.
