I'm using Windows XP and Office 2000.

This works:
-(No applications are open)
-Open Microsoft Word
-Open the Internet and copy a sentence
-Go to Word and paste the sentence

But this does NOT work:
-(No applications are open)
-Open Internet and copy a sentence
-Open Word and try to paste the sentence. You can't!

Does the clipboard only work if Word is already open?
Thanks,
Ruth

I just tested this on my home pc using Win 98 and Office 2000.

My Zone Alarm firewall immediately kicked in and queried the need for Word to access the Internet. Once I gave authority the paste was ok.

So this could be a firewall problem.

But this does NOT work:
-(No applications are open)
-Open Internet and copy a sentence
-Open Word and try to paste the sentence. You can't

Using IE 6.0...XP Home and XP Office....right clicked your sentance...Copy.......opened Word.....Right click PASTE...and went in to Word doc ok.....weird you can` t do it?

Thanks to both of you for writing.

Cheerio,
I don't think it's a firewall problem because, in the Firewall setting for WinXP, i have the following UNchecked: 'protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the internet'.

I tried enabling the firewall by checking the box, but it didn't fix my copying and pasting problem.

Coakerb,
I am also using IE 6.0 and WinXP and i tried pasting with both Word 2000 and Word 2002, but no luck. I don't get the Paste option in Word unless a version of Word is open BEFORE i copy the text.

Could it be a problem with my clipboard setting? I don't even know where to find my Clipboard. i looked under Accessories, but it wasn't there.

Thanks!

I guess there are some registry problems that are stopping things working properly. Some of the following may help.

I wonder if you have installed the XP windows updates:

Or all the Office 2000 updates:

Office 2000 applications including Word use an "advanced" clipboard:

It can be disabled:

XP has a standard clipboard viewer, clipbrd.exe which may need to be installed to see if the XP clipboard is working:

Good luck!

win xp & off xp & mozilla: no matter what are open or sequence, copy/paste always does its job [2thumbsup]

Coakerb,
I looked at the link you sent. it's interesting, but doesn't mention about not being able to paste at all. If i'm in IE 6 and copy something and then open Word, the Paste option is grayed out.

Flyboytim,
thanks for the links. i'm using my dad's computer and i don't want to start installing stuff on it. his computer is only about one year old though. Do i really need the updates? (he installs all critical updates that windows tells him about)

i was able to find the clipboard. (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CLIPBRD.EXE) thanks for telling me the name: clipbrd.

The clipboard seems to be working fine. But for some reason, Word (or Excel) has to be open before i hit Copy.

I use AOL as my ISP so I went to AOL Help Online and asked my question. But, I was just told 'it seems like the Paste function doesn't work if Word isn't first launched'.

So no one else is having this same problem?
Thanks,

No not having your problem, one more thing you could try is to open word.....click on HELP...and choose the repair option..will need your office CD...wont do any harm and might just be an easy fix?
