Hi, I am totally new to reporting services.

I would like to copy a report from one server to another. Both are SQL 2005 servers.

I found the RDL file for the report on the source server, do I just need to copy that file over or is there more to it than that

OK so I did just copy the RDL file to the new server.

I created a new project, and added an existing RDL.

Unfortunately the RDL was just one of many in the source project, and also there is many datasources.

This RDL I am trying to copy has 3 datasets....I can't seem to ascertain what data sources these datasets are using.

Anybody know how to view these properties?

To my knowledge .rdl and .rds files can be transfered from one location to another. These files are XML-based designs of your report. If you look through the .rdl file you already brought over to the new server, you should find a <DataSource> tag section. This lists the datasources you would need. There are also <DataSet> tags which define the datasets based off the datasource.

Also, if you still have access tot he report on the old server, you can open it in design view, go to the Data tab, select a Dataset, click the ellipse next to the Dataset selection and on the Query tab is a DataSource line....same as in the .rdl raw file....It displays the name of the DataSource used for that particular DataSet.

Thanks.

I just copied over RDS and RDL files and added them to a new solution. Actually when you try to view the copied datasets it will tell you what data sources it was looking for.

The Build\Deploy went well and the 2nd instance of this report is now working from an alternate location.

Thanks All

Pretty cool little tool nomadicalloy. I am going to add that to my "toolbox". Thanks. Have a star.
