How to convert Openstage 60 HFA to SIP?

Hi Everyone,

I have a Siemens Openstage 60 HFA with firmware version: V1 R3.6.0 HFA 081107 and I want to convert it to SIP. How can I do this? I have the V3 SIP firmware now but the phone won't update via FTP, HTTPs or USB. I have put the file on USB but there is no way to upgrade this. If I have to do step by step upgrade by using under firmware please post links to download as I don't have re-seller access to Siemens.

On one attemtpt, I got "File not supported". Not sure if this is regarding HFA to SIP or what...

I guess my main question here is if it is possible or not to convert an HFA phone to SIP.

I recommend to user FTP

1) install some FTP server on your computer (Ex: TFTP)
2) Configure it
3) Download from internet new version of HFA firmware (i recommend: OS_40_HFA_V3_R0_16_3.img)
4) Configure FTP information at phone -> Administrator -> File transfer -> Phone application
5) Download SIP firmware and do the same..
 
Both the current SIP firmware and current HFA firmware are provided in threads down 6 or 7 from this one. Just look for threads about firmware or software. You don't have to upgrade the HFA version before you flash to SIP.

Flash the phone to the SIP firmware as noted above (the only way I could see someone wanting to go from HFA to SIP in a 4K environment is if you want to use the video capabilities of the phone). Then reboot the phone and key in all your SIP information to set it up.

Also note that if you have the IP address of the phone you can go to address of phone> and login to the Administrator menus with the default 123456 if you haven't changed it. From there you can enter all the file transfer information with a real keyboard and not have to phone-spell it all out.

When I try to upgrade the web portal for phone complains "Not possible, the phone is busy" and I see on phone screen "1 of 2 Downloading" but then it fails and nothing updates by giving error message, "Download failed"

On ftp server, I see a connection is attempted but that's all.

I tried both HFA and SIP latest and it fails. I can not find ling

Note you are working in a unix/linux environment, and the exact case of your login, password, and filename must exactly match. So if your file is os_60_sip.... you have to enter it in that way. Everyone else's mileage may vary, but I am in the habit of putting my filename in all lowercase and mushing it all together with no spaces or punctuation.

I don't know your skill in setting up the FTP server, but make sure the login you are using has permission to access the directory you have the file in. You can test that by using a regular ftp client an that login/password. If you use Firefox I recommena the "FireFTP" add-on, which after installing you will find in the firefox menu under developer tools, or something generic lice CuteFTP....

You might also try placing a ./ in the FTP path box. That tells it to look for the file in whatever directory you are in after you login (home directory of "open"), in contrast to just using a / , which tells it to look for the file in the base of whatever directory tree the FTP server has access to....

It can be fun, but once you get your routine down it's not that difficult.
 
Thanks donb01. I wish there was a logger on the phone so I could quickly check and see what the problem is. I am sure it's one of those you are mentioning but I have been banging my head and getting bored of it now.

I will check again and I will report.

I also have same issue with HTTPs. Does that require a publicly identifiable SSL certificate? Can't I do port 80 and HTTP?
 
Leave your transfer set to FTP mode.

Ohhhh.... and for ftp account put in the word 'phone' - I think that has to be in there. It has been quite a while because I have had the DLS server since last May and that lets me push out new software very easily. Back when I started I only had anbout 30 IP phones and I was doing them all by hand.

Also make sure if you are running Windows Firewall that when you installed your ftp server (unless you are using a real/linux already set up FTP server) that it has made an exception for that application, or that Port 21 is open in the firewall for both TCP and UDP. The firewall could be blocking your phone's ability to connect to your PC.

Thanks donb01 - this was a windows firewall issue. I didn't have to put ftp account "phone".

What is a deployment pin? Is this something that requires a paid subscription to Unify?
 
I've never used it, and as far as I know it's not necessary. I'm sure it has something to do with using the DLS (Deployment) server because I've seen it there, but I haven't taken that class yet. I can do the basics with the DLS - set up phones, push out updates, logos and screensavers, and the like, dabbling with profiles and templates, but I haven't gotten much further than that so far. Most of it's been the school of hard knocks, but I did just get started on my tech certification training. So far I've taken the basic class on using the Assistant, which I will admit I thought was going to be a joke because I've been using it for 5 years already, but I learned quite a few cool tricks in that class, and some ways of saving time or things I have been trying to figure out how to do. Conversely I also thought it was amusing that a couple of us in the class knew a few tricks that we shared with the instructor as well. If you get a chance to take that class I would definitely recommend it as a start. We learned about the different types of PINs and what you can do with them, but I think the deployment pin is unique to the deployment server.

I'm glad I finally threw enough ideas out there that we found one that solved the problem! I wish my problems were that easy. The Black Box customer service people hate to see tickets come in from me because they know I beat it to death trying to find the answer before I called them, so they are going to have to scratch their heads a bit to find the answer... All my classes in TX are waitlisted right now, which makes it kind of hard to plan a life when you don't know when you are going to have to blow town for 2 weeks!
