Hello. I am new at servers and at my job, we got a new server with W2K on it. We are able to create users, but now we are stuck...we can not connect our desktop comupter to the server!
I can ping the computer and our computers can see it and vis versa pinging to mine from the server. Whwat am I doing wrong?

Going to need more info. What do you mean by connect. Can't see it in nework neighborhood? Glen A. Johnson

I mean to try to map it, using window explorer (how I was taught to connect two compters). When you are mapping the couple of people that tried to help, say that they can not see if on the list to connect to.

The computer expert in our department never had to deal with servers till now, so we all are learning.

Thanks.

First, type ipconfig /all on the clients and see if the settings are correct. If they are, try setting up hosts and lmhosts files and see if that helps. I've found that if you've got a nic that's sending out bad packets, even though it's working, it confuses the computers enough to cause this problem. The lmhosts file will help with the networking, the hosts will help with the internet connection. (Put my default web site's IP in my hosts file, connects almost instantly.) This is only a patch and not a remedy, but it might help figure certain things out. Glen A. Johnson

We tried that. Nothing is working. Would it matter if I am trying to connect from a Window 98 computer?

Can you manually map it. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it's not there. Go to your mappings and select map drive. Pick the drive you want and manually type in \\Servername\foldername and see what happens. Also, it the folder you're connecting to shared? One more thing, in the security options on the folder, who has rites to it? Glen A. Johnson

I did that. Nothing works. I check security rights to the E drive, and it said everyone.

When you type ipconfig /all, what does it show? Glen A. Johnson

1. Make sure all your clients and the server all have the same workgroup name.

2. Make sure microsoft networking is installed.

3. If your win2k server is set up as a domain controller, make sure your win2k clients are logging into the domain name, and on your win98 computers, make sure the workgroup mane is the same as the domain name, and if you are going to use the win2k server to authenticate users, make sure the win98 machines are set up to obtain users and groups from that domain name.
