my friend in the next house is using a SMC wireless router to connect to the internet. How can I hook up my D-Link wireless router to share his internet connection ?

The reason I want to do this is because the signal is quite weak and I was hoping I could use the router to bridge the signal. Not sure if this can be done or not.

Thanks

you could allow your friends router to do the routing and just set your router up as an access point (no dhcp, no routing) on his network - or if his router can be configured to assign dynamic ip addresses, you could do the above and be a dynamic client on the network.

ElijaBailey - How do I setup my router to be an AP only. I tried setting my router to accept a dynamic IP but it didn't work. I know all his setting (Gateway, SSID, etc), is there no way for me use those information ?

bcastner - The site you send me was to connect a wired router to a wireless. I tried doing it for the 2 wireless router but it didn't work.

Thanks

If your intention is to somehow make a wireless connection from router B to router A, it will not work.

You need to run cable between the two routers. The instructions I gave you will work whether the routers are wired or wireless, but you need the cable connection.

As ElijaBailey suggested, and is detailed in the link I provided, you essentially use your wireless router as an AP, connected by a cable to the original router.

what you're looking for is a wireless repeater.

the d-link's wireless AP only operates on the LAN side; not the WAN.

i'd suggest buying some cable - it's a darn sight cheaper than a wireless repeater!

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[pc][ul][li]please give feedback on what works / what doesn't[/li][li]need some help? how to get a better answer: faq581-3339[/li][/ul]

Actually the D-Link DWL-900AP+ can act as a repeater, and you can get it for under $70!

pl018: If I understand correctly you are trying to connect your wireless router to your neighbor's wireless network, right? As far as I know it isn't possible. You could buy an access point that can act as a wireless client and plug that into your computer, but make sure it is compatible with the access point you want to connect to. If you're trying to connect your network to his you could get two access points and set them in bridge mode. I'm not sure about this, but I wonder what would happen if you setup an access point in client mode and attached it to the WAN port on your router... crazy idea, but it may work!

btw, as a safety tip, NEVER run wires between buildings without (1) a building permit, and (2) an electrical contractor involved...

There could be a different "potential" between the two building and the resulting shock could be lethal...

good hunting!!

Setnaffa is an MCP-W2K (working on MCSE-W2K) with a few other certs, too...
