how to configure sun storedge multipack on ultra60 2

I just got a sun storedge multipack (6 hd) and is trying to configure it on my ultra60. It connects to scsi port directly through the back of ultra60. all the led is up on the front panel of the multipack. When it boots with "boot -r", console keep showing following message.

Sounds like there is a bad drive 0 in the multi pack.

From the ok> prompt if you do a probe-scsi-all does it show up? With all the drives?

If you remove drive 0 from the multipack does it come up correctly?

I also don't recall if the internal disks are on the same scsi bus, the internal drives usually have 0 and 1 scsi id. There is a switch on multi packs so they use can use scsi id 0 - 5 *OR* 8 - 13 to avoid id conflicts.

I don't remember if those storedge boxes were self terminating, if not you may need a terminator

Terminator is installed and led is green.

When my ultra60 starts, it take forever to initiate all 6 drives in the multipack. Every one of the target (total 12) failed with "SCSI bus reset" message. Do not believe all 6 HD are bad. When I pull out the SCSI cable, system start normal immediately. Is it possible the cable is not compatible the Storedge Array?

Make sure you have the correct kind of scsi card. A common card for those and systems of that era are differential scsi cards. You need a non- differential scsi card, also not all terminators are equal, there are differential and non-differential terminators. Make sure it actually is a sun branded terminator you are using.

I doubt all the drives are bad, sounds like a scsi bus/communication issue.

The part # of the terminator I used is 150-2267. It's a SUN brand "27 line forced perfect terminator". According to sunsolve, that's the correct part number. I'm getting another sun SCSI cable now. Hope it resolves it.

I just got a new sun SCSI cable. However, still no luck. What I observed is when the os console show SCSI bus reset, the lights of the device went off along with hard drive shut down sound. Then hear hard drive reboot sound. Does this mean the device is bad?

What does a probe-scsi-all show from the ok> prompt?

You can also from the ok> prompt cd into the scsi card and do a show-children and a .properties to verify the card and the devices eg-

ok> cd /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3,1
ok> show-children
ok .properties


Have you tried removing one drive at a time to see if it resolves the issue?

Thank you for the geat idea. The problem is resolved now. It turns out the storedge device has some shredded paper inside. I have to re-assemble the whole unit. Also found the bad hard drives are also causing the bus reset. After replacing that, I can access all the drives now.
