ANYONE CAN HELP ME? I CAN NOT CONNECT TO THE EXCAHNGE SERVER 5.5
WITH MY OUTLOOK EXPRESS 2000. HOW TO SETUP THE OUTLOOK EXPRESS 2000 TO CONNECT TO EXCHANGE SERVER 5.5 SP3 RUNNING IN WINDOWS NT 4 SP6?

sorry for my typing, i dont mean to yell,
the issue is when i try to connect to the exchange server is; "The IMAP server has issued an unrecognized greeting."
Where did i go wrong brontosaurus?

got to admit, i've never seen that error...couple of questions:

1) You can connect to the server using a regular client like Outlook, yes?
2) What authentication protocols are you requiring for IMAP? I'm not sure that OE can use MS-CHAP, so make sure you're allowing Basic.

If all else fails, we can turn up logging on the server and see what's going wrong...

Brontosaurus,
i can connect if i use microsoft outlook, but the if i use outlook express i got that message. i dont check the aunthentication box.

OK, so in exchange admin, under protocols/IMAP4/Authentication, you just have Basic checked, right? It just seems like the server is trying to get some other kind of authentication response from the client...

if you want to turn on logging, you can set it directly on the Information store of the server in question (set it to maximum for debugging purposes), or you can go into the server's registry at
\HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem\IMAP4 Protocol Logging Level,

set that value to 4.

brontosaurus,
yes, i just have the basic checked.

you might want to check the event viewer for more specific info and turn on logging as I suggested. Also, when you set up the IMAP accounts in OE, you didn't specify to use any other security, like SSL, or certificates, did you?

brontosaurus,
i'm back after a long medetation, this puzzles me, what i got in the event viewer is; "Logon attempt has failed, HRlookup credentials call failed with error logon failure unknown user name or bad password."
But if i use microsoft outlook there is no problem i can connect to the exchange server. where do think i have gone wrong? is there a detailed instruction i can follow to setup the outlook express to the exchange server?

well, actually, that's kind of good, at least you're getting to the server. Now, when you start OE, are you getting prompted for credentials? One thing to be aware of with IMAP, when you log in, not only do you need the domain name, but you may also need your mail alias (if it's different from your LAN ID). In other words, just the login "ID" would look something like this:

YOUR-DOMAIN\YOUR-LAN-ID\YOUR-MAILBOX-ALIAS

So, let's say your domain is COMPANY.COM, your LAN ID is JOSEPH, and your mailbox alias is JOE, your IMAP login would be :

COMPANY\JOSEPH\JOE

followed by your password. Give it a try.

brontosaurus,
i think i'm getting near, the error i got is; "The server has rejected your loggin, pls. verify that the user name & password is correct."

in the OE server information, what should be my, incoming mail (IMAP)????? and the outgoing mail (SMTP)?????,
if my domain name is COMPANY.COM, my exchange server is installed in the machine name XYZ, and my LAN domain is ABC, my LAN ID is BOB, my mailbox alias is BOBY?

in the IMAP tab; what will be the root folder path:????

in the advanced tab; in the server port numbers, the Outgoing mail (SMTP): 25
Incoming mail (IMAP): 143
the SSL's are not checked.

Your incoming IMAIL and outgoing SMTP mail servers are the same. Using your examples, you would enter these as:

XYZ.COMPANY.COM

Your login credentials would be (again, using your example):

ABC\BOB\BOBY

and you would use your LAN password with that. Sorry if I confused you with my prior post...

Yup .. or just try simply

domain\username

then

Password Alshrim
System Administrator
MCSE, MCP+Internet

Thanks Brontosaurus & Alshrim,
I got it working now, wheew... just a simple error, stuck me for a long time.
But thanks, that you guys are there to guide us.
You make life easy for us dummies.
