This has remained one of the eternal mysteries of illustrator for me. If someone can answer this I'll be impressed!

Whenever I convert a lower case "i" to outlines to try to colour the fill of the dot a different colour to the stem of the "i", illustrator changes the colour of both the dot and the stem.

This happens no matter how many times I do "expand appearance" and it also happens when I've only got the four points of the dot of the"i" selected, using the direct selection tool.

Why?

Right click on the 'i', 'Ungroup' then 'Release Compound Path'. The select the dot to change the attributes. Group again to move the dot with the rest.

Moe: It could have been a real ugly situation, but luckily I managed to shoot him in the spine.

Thanks!

for Mac users, the "right click" isn't necessary, just use a normal mouse click.
