hello,
I would like to know what are the methods to close
some ports manually with windows nt/w2k or to simulate
that they are closed from the net(without using a firewall).
Go to C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc and open the services file in notepad(don't associate it with notepad). And put a # sign in before the service/port.
example:
(enabled)
ftp 21/tcp #FTP. control
(disabled)
ftp 21/tcp #FTP. control
I tried all you said to close some ports but it seems not to work...to test it, i closed several ports(netbios, http..)but I was able to use internet afterthat, moreover, I then scanned my pc with Ciberius Internet Scanner but unfortunately the scanner could detect the open ports and gave a lot of informations...So please tell me what can I do to really close the ports i want?
thanks a lot.
- this one's even free for personal use. I don't know if it can be done with the operating system itself...
There is also a difference on whether the ports are just closed or really hidden. Closed ports can still be accessed, but they reject calls. I'm not a hacker, so don't ask me how this really works - but hidden ports just let the calls that arrive for them disappear so the information seems lost to the caller - he doesn't even see there is a system at the other end... allow thyself to be the spark that lights the fire
