I had win98se install on part1 and an extended
part on part2. The other day I tried to install
w2k onto it. There was an instruction asking me
if I want to install on a new part. and I did answer
yes. A new NTFS was created and when everything
is finished, it reboot and ..... the black screen shows
up, asking me if I want to boot 98 or w2k.... which
is not I want. After I bootup the w2k, the drive c:
is not the new NTFS part, instead it is the 1st part.
that I had 98 on it. Looks as though the program
has been installed onto part.1 instead of part.3 or
at least the boot loader is on 1st part. instead on
3rd part. I can do the installation again (please
tell me where to specify where to put the boot
loader!!!!) but I think the black screen would not
go, right? How am I going to scratch it from the
98 part? And when in the w2k installation did
it tell me I can have a choice of where to put
the boot loader? Maybe I should hide the 1st
and 2nd part. with partition magic first before
they would put the boot loader onto the 3rd
NTFS part.?

Your input will be much appreciated...

You do not get to choose where the os installs the boot files they must be on partition 1. Windows can be installed to any partition but not the boot files.

There is third party software that can hide one partition from another which allows any partition selected to become the boot partition or active partition by hiding the other. In other words the os boot files must be on the active partition and there can only be one active partition at a time.

I've used partition magic, works ok. There may be more.

Yes and thanks. I know about partition magic
and have tried it. But now the first thing is how
to get rid of the w2k and reinstall. How can I
scratch off the menu that comes up at boot time.
(You know the menu on the black screen, letting
you choosing between w2k and 98se) I don't
think the menu will go off even if I delete the
NTFS part. right? Any idea how to do it.

You can change the settings for this menu by right click my computer, properties, advanced tab, startup abnd recover button. But, to remove the menu you will need to remove w2k from the PC. This menu comes from w2k and not win98.

You should be able to set the display time to 0 seconds and the menu will not be seen.

In order For win2k to boot from any partition it has to put a reference to itself on the boot drive.

If you want your 3rd partition to be a standalone os you have to use a second physical drive.

Make the second drive the primary master drive. This will put the loader on that drive.

This however will cause you to need to switch drives around whenever you want to switch between your os'.

hope this helps...
