I was wondering if there is some function in InDesign which informs you of the resolution of all of the placed images within a document? (without having to open the original files)

This would be really handy for double-checking that all lo-res images have been replaced with hi-res ones.

Is there such a function?

Yes there is in InDesign CS

Use the Infopalette, or use the Preflight function there you have a links list, when you select a link you can see the resolution below.

PS! The Infopalette can be unstable so give it a restart.
