I have a Compaq Presario MV500 monitor. I'm looking for a manual for it. Or, if someone can tell me how to lighten the screen? It has a couple of little buttons on the front, but I don't have a clue how they're supposed to operate. Usually when I try to lighten the screen, it becomes contorted instead.

Thank you in advance.

Sooner or later the buttons on the front or back should work for you. Its usually only a combination of pushes on the buttons.
If you have exhausted all the ways to move the buttons it could be possible that the monitor is starting to fail. Its common for them to go darker and darker til they just simply die.
Look on the back and check on the date and let us know the date on it.
Sorry about the news and i sure hope i am wrong.
Then again, even 19 to 22 in crt monitors can be had for very little these days. Thats what i do, i simply buy 21 and 22 inch monitors. I will wait til they are all gone before i move to an lcd unit. I prefer crt to lcd anyway.

Thanks, Garebo. It's a 1998 model. But the brightening feature does still work. It's happened a few times, when I hit the right combination of buttons. It's frustrating though, not knowing how to make it happen again. I've been fiddling around with it all night, and no joy so far. It darkens very well, at the moment, but won't brighten. I contacted Compaq, but they no longer have a manual for that particular model.

Thats just it, you have to mess with the buttons, but usually its not too hard to do, thats what made me think that maybe the monitor is on the way out but it seems not so thats great. Sorry i cant help you more than that.

On the back of the monitor itself you should be able to find a model number of the monitor itself. Look that up instead of the model number of the computer. MIght have better luck finding information on it.

Could be a video card problem also. You say you can darken it, but not brighten it. This would indicate a problem, and not just an adjustment.

thats why i pointed out it could be the monitor is aging and starting to fail. I had two old monitors do that to me, go darker and darker and one day no picture at all.

Thanks, Franklin. The manuals were helpful. At least I know now what all these little doodads are. ;-)

Get the real Monitor Drives from the manufacturer.

Update the Video card Drivers.

Update MS Active-X.

All of the above.

Or buy new monitor.

IMHO, it doesn't sound like a driver problem. It sounds like a gassy tube.

Picture tubes in monitors (and televisions) can have a couple of things go wrong with them, that will adversely affect quality and brightness.

The electron guns can get a little oxidation on them, so they do not emit electrons as well as they should....

The tube can get "gassy", where there is gaseous obstructions in the tube, obstructing the flow of electrons.

My advice, if you want to keep the monitor, is to take it to a TV repair shop, and have them test the tube, and adjust the beta voltage.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS BY YOURSELF. There are KILLER voltages inside of any CRT-based monitor or television set. I'm not talking "Oh, it runs on 110 volts", I'm talking upwards of 35,000 volts. NEVER attempt to work on a television or monitor if you don't know what you're doing!

Just my $0.02

If you havent a good picture by now then its as i said, the unit is going bad on you. gbaughma has pointed out one thing that it could be.
Depending on its size, it may or may not be worth taking to a shop. But with crt units going so cheap these days, its likely not worth it. YOu can pick up a used 19 to 22 in unit cheap.

On some monitor If you take of the back cover of it you should see some nobs thats you cant twist that will brighten/contrast the screen. Also some graphic card drivers will let you brighten up the screen (ATI drivers will let you do that but dont know about other makes)

I dont suggest opening a monitor unless you are experienced at it. Just not worth losing your life over.
