How to Block External Incoming to an Extension

We have Mitel SX2000; Lightware 34; T1 trunks. We need to block all incoming calls from external to our site to a few extensions. Currently, only analog desk sets are to be blocked, but later some digital as well, if that makes a difference. I tried setting "NonDID Extension" in the COS, but that did not work.

Any suggestions?

Do you have backup copper trunks?

I have never done it, but could you use interconnect restriction of the t1 trunks to those extensions and make those extensions use the copper trunks by way of COR restrictions in ARS? This would really only work with backup copper trunks or even a 2nd T1 that the DIDs are not on.

Perhaps some other suggestions are out there...

I don't think that will work here. We are actually connected to the outside world by satellite. No land lines at all (microwave soon though!)

We have several dispatchers and control room operators. Management does not want these people bothered by external incoming calls. They cannot really stop calls going out to external locations for safety reasons, but we can control these with "Account Code Verified". The only allowable incoming calls to those extensions are to be from within our own PBX.

Well, let's get sneaky then.

First, don't assign DID numbers to those extensions. Pretty obvious, but has to be said.

Second, consider using non-standard extension DNs. Such as *5678, 4#2*7, or 29*#78*2. The thought here would be "who would know to dial this number?" Then, don't label the phone with that extension DN.

Not completely sure, but I think that you can stop name display on internal calls, so there may be a COS option to stop DN display on internal calls.

Aha! Of course, thanks for the tip. All I need to do is change the extension number to one that is outside of the block that we lease from the telephone company. The users can still dial out to the outside world, but nobody can dial in to their extensions. We don't care if anyone knows the number, as long as they cannot dial in to it. Perfect!

You could make a speedcall that matches your DDI
Give it no destination or (if not possible) route it to the operator

The match must be the the same amount of digits that come in
So if you absorb 4 digits be sure you remove them in the speedcall

If you have multiple controllers keep the digit length consistant to allow calls between controllers.

Also the extension number will display on some phones so I suggest you use the # key somewhere in the extension to prevent some smartass from using the voicemail auto-attendant to bypass your solution.

Why don't you just use ring groups and add the extensions you want to ring to the groups.
