How to 'Adjust' job conditions, based on possible alternative job?

I went for an interview for a vacancy very similar to my current job, with a competing company. I think I may have swung it, from the immediate feedback I got from the Recruiter.

The 'New' Job still needs me to drive to work, but 10 miles closer to my home.

The journey takes longer, by about 20 minutes, and involves a lot of city traffic, albeit on a (congested) ring road.

The salary is about the same as my current one, with travel allowance claimable.

The working hours can be flexed within the day, so long as the core requirement of 8 hours is met.

My 'Now' Job is 10 miles longer, but only takes 50 minutes, mostly on motorways and dual-carriageways.

I just got a 2 percent pay rise.

There is no way (at present) to flex my hours to miss rush hour, etc.

My dilemma is: Should I approach my current Manager and discuss some improvements to my conditions, e.g. Fuel Allowance, Flexi Hours? Or accept the New job?

If I negotiate, what is the best approach, ie the most likely to succeed?

All advice gratefully received.

From what I understand in these situations it is possible to alienate yourself by making requests for change in work conditions that result from the offer of a new job. If you do approach them for a review of your current situation I would suggest not bringing up, at least a confrontational manner the fact that you are looking elsewhere for employment. This may very well burn some bridges and be cause for resentment... Of course this is just from rumors and my own personal opinions so how much weight this holds is up to you.

In any case good luck.

Should I approach my current Manager and discuss some improvements to my conditions, e.g. Fuel Allowance...
I don't understand why you think you should be allowed this. I've never heard of anyone be paid for the gas they use to drive to work every day. If you're using your personal vehicle for company use, then yes, you should get a fuel allowance. But just because it takes you so long to drive to work you should be compensated? No.

As grace7206 pointed out, 50 minutes is not a short commute. Personally, I would want to live closer to where I work, or work closer to where I live.

Hope This Helps!

Whatever you do, do not tell them you have interviewed somewhere else and are looking for another job. THis is a quick way to get eased out of your current job.
If you want to discuss changes in work conditions, then prepare a cost benefit analysis showing why the change would be an overall benefit to the company.

Definately aggree with SQLSister here.

Depending on your relationship with your manager there might be some give-n-take on current work conditions. But if you already interviewed for something else doesn't that mean that there were issues at your current job you were unhappy about?

And the commute, I wish mine was only 50 minutes and I only go about 20 miles or so, another 20 minutes isn't a big deal. It might be easier, being in a downtown location to use public trans for commuting (ie: trains and buses)

You dont specify whether you are from UK or not, but certantly in any job Ive been in (UK) ive never been compensated for travel to or from a permanent place of work. Of course if I was working on a sub site or a non permanent site, eg ad hoc, then I would be awarded the difference in travelling. Never been awarded travel to or from a perm place of work, you might want to check wording :(

Ask current employer for monetary changes, and , or work rules, expenses etc. DO not mention other offer, at all, ever. If you have to blackmail a raise, it will just mean they gave you your next raise early, and you wont get the next one.
If they do not offer you what you need, want, etc., then give notice, and do not volunteer that you took another offer. If they are interested they will ask you for exit interview, or inquire.

Why are you looking to move to another position? Was the interview just to find out what else is out there?

Usually when people look for a job its because they are unsatisfied where they currently work. If you want to have the travel allowance, I would take that job and negotiate that with future jobs. Unfortunately though without mentioning about this new job (which would be bad), I don't think you have much room to negotiate with your current job.
