How to Add Drive to Array?

I searched but didn't find this subject.

We have Win Server2003 with 1 3 drive Raid 5 array with 1 partition, and about 100 users. Everything is on this array - OS, Sql Svr, user files, etc.

We also have another identical server except it is the DC and runs only Exchange.

Recently, we received a new drive for each server, presumably to be added to the existing array. However, now our tech says we cannot just plug it in and let it reconfigure, but would have to back up everything, delete the array and rebuild it with the new drive and reinstall everything. Is this right?

Also, the original drives are 34GB and the new 67GB. Don't we effectively reduce this drive to the 34GB of the others by adding it?

If we add the drive, should we partition the array to separate the OS from Sql Svr on one server and the OS from Exchange on the other?

Would we be better off keeping the drive standalone and put the SqlSvr logs on it - even tho no redundancy?

That sounds wierd to me, Check with the manufacture of the computer and they usually provide a management software that will enable you to just add a disk. It is still a good idea to get a complete backup of the system just incase it does not work. As for the second question yes it will reduce the size to match it with the other drives.

To answer the last one first: yes, in raid 5 config (actually, any redundant config) you reduce the size of the disk to match the other drives.

Normally you would be able to extend your RAID5 set on the hardware level (like ACU for HP ProLiant servers).

You can use DISKPART in Win2000 and up to dynamically extend the disk space, but you gotta know what you're doing. No guarrantees here!

Happy hunting!

I view your wanting to add a drive to your array as extending the array....

See
From RAID-5 volumes cannot be mirrored, and they cannot be extended

I believe your tech is correct. You might look at third party solutions i.e. such as suggested by Loki1973; DISKPART but heed the warning "gotta know what you're doing. No guarrantees here!"
